Infants 4 to 6 months old

This is a 2 to 4 stage process depending upon the pathway:

An initial consultation with Dr Roche and Feeding support (IBCLC). If surgery is required a plan is made to determine what is required before surgery and which pathway is best for your child. The option of Frenectomy or Functional Frenuloplasty

If Frenectomy is the best pathway for your child:

There will be a session of feeding therapy to help in preparation for surgery

We will perform a frenectomy with topical anaesthesia using a CO2 laser. Further feeding support or therapy, either with the team at NTTC or locally, may be required after surgery.

If Functional Frenuloplasty is the best pathway for your child the following steps will apply:

2. Assessment of oral function and myofunctional work with Kate Roche, Chartered Physiotherapist (2 or 3 Sessions- as required)

3. Frenuloplasty under conscious sedation

Glossary of Terms

Frenectomy is the release  of a tie.

Functional Frenuloplasty is the release of a tie and release of sub-mucosal restrictions using CO2 laser (therapist-supported), and suturing of the diamond-shaped surgical site vertically which negates the need for active woundcare.
